UPDATE 28/06: The Western Districts Cat Society cat show has been postponed to August 14, 2021, due to COVID-19 restrictions and the lockdown of Greater Sydney.
EARLIER:
The Western Districts Cat Society is hosting its annual cat show at North Richmond Panthers in July and the public is invited to come along and watch the judging and meet some cute kitties.
Joanne Greentree, a local resident and member of the group, said they were excited to host the show at North Richmond this year after the 2020 show was cancelled due to covid.
"It will be a great day out and we'll be showing some beautiful cats. The club is a great venue as well, and you can have lunch at the bistro," Ms Greentree said.
All types of breeds will be on show including sphinx, american shorthair, ragdolls, persians, siamese, orientals and peterbalds.
"For us, being able to promote our cats and get them on a show bench [after covid] is really encouraging. It's very different when you're at home and not subjecting them to shows - shows help with their socialisation," Ms Greentree said.
Fluffy cat lovers will enjoy watching the persians with their long coats.
"People always love the look of the persian because in show condition they look amazing," said Ms Greentree.
"They're an eye catcher but you have to have the commitment to look after them, as they take a lot of work [to get show ready]."
Show-goers will also be able to browse a selection of cat toys and furniture from various stall-holders.
Punters can watch the judging, including for breeds as well as companion cats.
"These are domestic cats that people show," said Ms Greentree. "A lot of people rescue them, then start putting them on the show bench."
What makes a good companion show cat?
"Temperament, temperament, temperament," Ms Greentree said.
For the breeds, it's matching the breed standard, as well as presentation on the day.
Ms Greentree will be showing her male red-and-white exotic shorthair, Pogo, who is 18 months old and came from France.
"The enjoyment I get out of breeding cats is the benefit to your mental health of owning pets, but also as a breeder, you're always trying to see if you can improve the breeds as well," Ms Greentree said.
The cat show will take place at North Richmond Panthers, from 9am until 3pm on Saturday, July 10, and entry costs only a gold coin donation.
