The union said they were saddened at news of a fatality at Saraji South coal mine on Monday in Queensland's Bowen Basin.
"This is the worst news we can ever receive," said MEU Queensland President Mitch Hughes. "We are devastated that a coal miner is not returning home at the end of their shift.
"Our hearts go out to friends and family. We offer our deepest thanks to first responders and support to workmates who may be traumatised by the events.
"Union safety inspectors are at the site to conduct a thorough investigation, we will ensure no stone is left unturned in understanding what has occurred and preventing future fatalities and injuries."
Saraji is one of nine metallurgical coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin.
The Saraji mine is an open pit coal mine located near Dysart in Queensland's Bowen Basin on the traditional lands of the Barada Barna people. It is one of Australia's largest mines, by recoverable coal reserves.
Dysart is more than 900km north of Brisbane.
