Training a deaf dog can be the most challenging and most rewarding thing a dog owner can accomplish, according to Deaf Dogs Rescue Australia, which is hosting a workshop to support deaf dogs and their owners in the Hawkesbury.
The registered charity will host a Pop-Up Deaf Dog Training session near Windsor on Saturday, March 20.
There will be two Training Sessions available: little dogs under 15 kg will be at 11am; medium to large dogs over 15kg will be at 12.30pm.
Jai Wilson, Director and Founder of Deaf Dogs Rescue Australia, said deaf dogs were often discriminated against by being rejected for obedience classes and other socialisation opportunities.
"This makes it hard for people to train their deaf dogs and too often means that the dog ends up being surrendered to a rescue organisation like ours," she said.
Ms Wilson hopes to reverse this trend by "providing training and support to people who have deaf dogs so that the dog can stay in a loving home" instead of possibly being surrendered.
Places are limited so Deaf Dogs Rescue Australia encourages people wanting to attend this round of lessons to book early. The cost is $55 including GST with all fees going to Deaf Dogs Rescue Australia to help pay for the use of the facility and to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome other deaf and special needs dogs.
All dogs must be fully vaccinated.
Attendance is limited to two humans per dog and children must be 12 years or older. Bookings can be made via the Pop-Up Booking Form at form.jotform.com/210637679401861
There are plans for more Pop-Up Training locations across NSW in the future. Expressions of interest can be made by emailing the training team at DDRAtraining@gmail.com
