It was a successful kick off to the 2020/21 racing season at Hawkesbury Race Club as they hosted the 2020 Listed Rowley Mile race day on Thursday, August 20.
The day started off well for Hawkesbury trainers as Edward Cummings trained Obiri, took out a solid win in race two, edging out it's opponents by over a length.
This was followed by a win from the Garry White trained Winds Of War in the Three-year-old Maiden Handicap (1000m).
Despite the good start for local trainers, only two other Hawkesbury horses placed on the day.
James Cummings trained Emante ran second in race five and White's six-year-old gelding, Military Academy, placed second in race eight.
Jockey Tommy Berry had a great day on the track, running in two winners to kick off his season at Hawkesbury, including the days main race, the Rowley Mile.
In a come from behind win, Berry rode Chris Waller trained Savacool, to a stunning victory.
At the back of the pack with around 200m left, the six-year-old mare edged out the rest of the field by half a length, to claim first place in the historic race.
Clarry Conners' Girl Tuesday and Bjorn Baker's Spencer, ran in second and third.
Hawkesbury Race Club will officially kick off it's spring season in two weeks on Saturday, September 5 with it's Saddle Up For Spring race day. For information about the day and tickets visit hawkesburyraceclub.com.au
