WHEN was the last time you visited South Windsor? If you didn't live in the immediate vicinity, you'd be forgiven for thinking the George Street strip provided only shopping basics.
But Councillors Danielle Wheeler and Emma-Jane-Garrow are putting the spotlight on the area for its 'hidden gem' eateries, following Hawkesbury City Council announcing plans for a facelift for the area as part of the Liveability Program.
"The White Gum Cafe is fabulous, and you can't beat the Banh Mi from Just Baked," Ms Wheeler told the Gazette.
"Some of the best lunchtime fare in the Hawkesbury is in South Windsor. The food is fresh, fast, affordable and really good quality. The queues outside the shops are a pretty good indication of how good the food is. But don't worry - you never have to wait long."
Ms Wheeler, who lives on the other side of the river, often makes the drive over to South Windsor for the Banh Mi.
"You can grab lunch quickly and eat in the park. Everyone is really friendly, there are some great shops to browse in, and if everyone in your family wants something different you can still manage that in a short lunch break because the shopping strip is small and diverse," she said.
Ms Garrow encouraged locals to make the drive to South Windsor.
"If you are not already a frequent South Windsor visitor then I strongly recommend you get down and try the amazing food from these long time local shops," she said.
"South Windsor shops have a long history in my life. From my after-school job at South Windsor Pharmacy to my last minute dinner options on the kids' sports run, South Windsor has everything on offer for a one stop shop."
South Windsor businesses are working with Council staff and PlaceScore to make South Windsor look as great as its food tastes.
Ms Wheeler said: "Everyone is really enthusiastic and I'm really looking forward to showing this hidden gem and its dedicated business owners some overdue TLC."
The town centres of South Windsor, along with Windsor and Richmond, will be overhauled by Council through an $18.75 million grant through the Western Parkland City Liveability Program.
A full list of the projects is listed in council's draft masterplan, which will go on display for 28 days before council goes ahead with any works.
Keep on eye on Council's website at www.hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au to provide your input into the plans.
