Community shouldn't 'second guess' interstate worker decisions, says Premier Peter Gutwein

Responding to queries about the anger voiced by some unions about firms bringing staff in from Victoria and other states, Mr Gutwein said he personally never saw the applications.

"The rules have been defined by the Director of Public Health and the final decision is made by the State Controller.

"They make those decisions based on the case put before them in terms of the skills that are required.

"I don't see the applications. That's at arm's length and that's the way it should be."

Mr Gutwein said the decisions were based on the rules from the Public Health Director and were administered by the State Controller.

"I'm not going to second guess the State Controller and I don't think the community should either," he said.

Mr Gutwein said the government could review quarantining arrangements for Tasmanian workers returning from interstate.

"If the circumstances in Victoria mean we have to revisit the quarantine arrangements for workers coming back to Tasmania from interstate, then we will.

"It is my understanding that Tullamarine (airport) is quite safe and that they have safety plans in place."

He said the government would consider which state people had been in, when assessing opening the border, but the situation in Victoria was concerning.

"If we were asked to open our border to Victoria tomorrow, we wouldn't do it.

"But I've laid out a plan.

"We've considered a formal review this week, and then we'll make a decision and I'll announce it on Friday."
