An IKEA product "bad at its one job" has taken out a gong in consumer group Choice's annual Shonky Awards, along with a provider of "zombie" superannuation and a health insurer accused of ripping off customers.
Pet insurance will also receive a nod while Freedom Foods XO Crunch cereal is being called out for "telling us a bag of sugar is healthy".
The 2019 awards highlight businesses and industries "who have ripped off, misled and treated Australians like cash cows to be exploited", Choice chief executive Alan Kirkland said in a statement on Thursday.
The organisation says one of the recipients, IKEA's Nedkyld fridge, is terrible at keeping food cold and failed a test against its star energy rating.
"I'd rather trust my lunch with penguins than stored in the IKEA Nedkyld," lab expert Ash Iredale said.
AMP Superannuation will get a gong for "ruined retirements", with Choice saying it held the largest number of "zombie" accounts that sat there being wasted away by fees and insurance.
Medibank is being highlighted for its basic policies, which were said to be "unashamedly more expensive than those of their competitors".
Choice said pet insurance was riddled with exclusions and technicalities, and the organisation refused to recommend any policy.
The organisation also called out Kogan for poor customer service.
