Doolan Plumbing director Jared Doolan was "totally caught off guard" by his company's Business of the Year win at the Hawkesbury Local Business Awards.

"I'm very proud," he said. "I'm just your typical Aussie battler who had a crack at starting a business.

"I thought we were in with a good chance of winning our section - which was trades and services - but in no way did I expect to win the overall business of the year."

Mr Doolan said as first-time nominees they had no idea what was involved when they decided to enter the awards.

"But when we reached the finals and started filling in the different categories for the online questionnaire I started to think to myself we actually do cover each category really well," he said.

"We have taken major steps to become a paperless business, we have a huge emphasis on training and our apprentices, and the majority of our staff, reside in the Hawkesbury, to name just a few of the reasons.

"Doolan Plumbing is a family business. We are a specialist commercial plumbing company, who represent the Hawkesbury right across Sydney and we are proud of our region and all our staff."

Mr Doolan said taking part in the awards gave him a chance to see other companies and the things they are doing within the community.

"By entering yourself into these awards it can only push you to try progress your company further and be better. So go for it."

Mr Doolan said he wanted to take the opportunity to thank the organisers of the business awards and all the sponsors who helped make the event possible.

"I would also like to thank those who voted for Doolan Plumbing to be business of the year," he said.

"I have always thought we were one of the Hawkesbury's top businesses but I'm biased, of course. So thanks for the recognition.

"My staff and I had a fantastic night and we will be back next year for sure. It is a great event to be involved in.

"The Hawkesbury is such a beautiful community and the awards is a way of bringing us together as well as a way to push each other to be better."

Mr Doolan said he had many people to thank but none more important than his wife Ursula. "She puts up with me when business is tough, and keeps me grounded when business is good."
