The call to keep the old Windsor Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists gained momentum this week, with members of a high-profile community group coming out in favour of the idea.
The Bells Line of Road Community Action Group (BLORCAG) recently polled its members on whether they would like to see the old bridge retained, with the majority "overwhelmingly in favour of retaining it", according to spokesperson Kathryn Williams.
Of the 111 members that had responded to the poll by Sunday, July 28, 97 per cent were in favour of the idea, Ms Williams stated.
BLORCAG looks set to join Community Action for Windsor Bridge (CAWB) in supporting retention of the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, with reasons put forward including providing ease of access to Macquarie Park from Thompson Square, and retaining the bridge's heritage value.
Members commented on the BLORCAG Faceboook page that seats could be installed on the bridge for the enjoyment of locals and tourists.
Suggestions also included that the old bridge could potentially provide the location for a farmers' market or pop-up cafes and stalls, as well as the fact it would provide a safe walkway and cycleway across the river.
Another suggestion was that heritage items removed from works conducted for the new bridge be permanently display on the old one.
However, concerns were addressed over the ongoing cost of the old bridge's maintenance, as well as the need to remove the railings in the event of flood, Ms Williams stated.
