A decorated officer with a career stretching across the globe has been announced as Australia's next top cop.
Reece Kershaw will take over as Australian Federal Police commissioner when Andrew Colvin retires in September.
"He has an extremely distinguished policing and public service career," Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
Mr Kershaw, who now leads the Northern Territory police, said ensuring the wellbeing of his staff was the highest priority.
"My initial focus will be around making sure those front-line officers in the AFP are supported with the right training and technology, the right equipment," he told reporters.
"That the operating model of the organisation is fit for purpose for now and into the future, and also that the health and wellbeing of all staff is examined in relation to those strategies and support mechanisms."
At least five AFP officers have taken their own lives in the workplace in the past two years.
Mr Kershaw has spent decades working in law enforcement across Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and has spent the past nine years working in state policing.
