It is unlikely recently elected Senator for the NT Sam McMahon will be setting up an electorate office in her home town of Katherine.
While that is the goal, rules only permit senators one office in their region.
Soon to be moving into outgoing Northern Territory senator Nigel Scullion's office in Darwin, Senator McMahon said she will be making the 300km trip from her home base of 30 years at least weekly.
"I would very much have liked to have an office in Katherine," she said.
"It would have been good for Katherine, and saved me a lot of kilometres."
She said a Katherine office "may be an option" if someone donates a small space.
The first-time senator was elected almost one month ago, after a "whirlwind" campaign.
"I had nothing left in the tank," she said.
"I didn't take [being elected] as a given, I worked hard to get around the electorate, to see and hear from as many people as possible."
Now in, she said she is working to set up her Darwin office, procure staff and learn the ropes of her new role, "to start working for the Territory".
"There is so much that needs to improve," she said.
"Tourism is doing quite badly and we need to get money flowing for Kakadu as well as that money promised for Defence.
"The Federal Government can't do it all, some of it is up to the NT Government, but we will assist where we can with things like crime, domestic violence, health, building infrastructure and water storage capacity."
Katherine Town Council can also expect a boost from Senator McMahon, as she hopes to assist on current projects such as the Sportsground and Showground revitalisations.
Senator McMahon will be visiting Canberra in the first week of July to attend an induction for new Senators as well as the first week of sittings.
The new role brings plenty of challenges for the Katherine vet.
"I will have to hit the ground running," she said.
"Coming from a private enterprise background and not involved in politics before I have a lot to learn."
