The peak body for young Australians living in aged care is disappointed the federal government is not pairing funding with its plan to help them into age-appropriate housing.
The federal government has promised to help the nearly 6000 younger Australians living in aged-care homes move into more suitable accommodation over the next few years.
Minister for Social Services Paul Fletcher said aged-care homes were not always equipped to support younger people with disabilities.
If they wish, people under the age of 45 will be assisted into alternative housing by 2022.
"Beyond 2025 we will continue our work to minimise to the fullest extent possible the number of younger people under 65 years of age entering and living in aged care," he said.
By 2025 the government hopes to halve the number of people aged under 65 from entering aged care, while also helping those already in such care find more suitable arrangements.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme will also provide people with options so they can live in the community.
The Young People In Nursing Homes National Alliance hopes the plan will be fuelled with further funding, rather than relying on the existing NDIS budget.
"The fact that this action plan signals a change in funding policy is a very positive feature," alliance director Bronwyn Morkham said.
"Many younger residents and their families will be relieved that they can have their NDIS plans reviewed to address this gap at last."
The alliance also wants a task force to urgently review plans for NDIS participants in aged care, and the creation of a body of stakeholders to review how policy can be implemented.
