The National Farmers' Federation has outlined a list of recommendations for the upcoming national drought summit to help producers battling barren conditions.
Friday's meeting in Canberra will bring together the national farming lobby, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Agriculture Minister David Littleproud and his state counterparts and premiers.
The NFF wants state and federal governments to launch negotiations to extend the scope, effectiveness and consistency of drought programs under the inter-governmental agreement.
It wants the future of the Rural Financial Counselling Service to be shored up with a long-term funding commitment including more staff in a wider geographical spread.
On insurance, the NFF wants funding for the Bureau of Meteorology's project to enable access for on-farm weather data to reduce premiums.
States will also be urged to dump stamp duty on farm insurance products.
The peak body for farmers will also push for new rules and incentives for Farm Management Deposits to boost their uptake and effectiveness.
For future droughts, the NFF is calling for more focus on infrastructure and regenerative farming projects centred on land stewardship.
Farm Household Assistance, a welfare payment for producers doing it tough, should have more Centrelink workers available and an easier application process to be more widely accessible, the NFF says.
The prime minister said the summit showed drought was a key government focus.
"We are focused on a coordinated response to the drought to ensure that we don't just provide the relief, that we provide the recovery and we provide the resilience for the future," Mr Morrison told parliament on Tuesday.
