A transformer at the back of Richmond’s Windsor Street shops was ablaze this morning, closing the adjoining car park.
NSW Fire and Rescue Richmond station commander James Rowland said fire crews were called to the scene near the back of RG McGee's Hotel at 10am today (October 22).
“On arrival the fire was developing, and shortly after Richmond fire station [officers] arrived the fire increased in size significantly and turbulently,” he said in a statement.
“Richmond firefighters deployed to hose lines and protected the two adjoining properties from being damaged by fire.
“One hotel had slight damage from the flame however no further fire spread occurred due to the efforts of firefighters, who had the fire under control within 20 minutes from the first 000 phone call.”
Richmond firefighters were assisted by those from Windsor and Cranebrook stations, and police and NSW Ambulance officers were also on the scene.
Dunheved, Penrith, Riverstone and Kellyville firefighters were also deployed, however were not utilised, Mr Rowland said.
The cause of the blaze is unknown, and Mr Rowland said the electrical company involved was continuing work on the site.
It was the second response by local firefighters in about 12 hours, as Richmond and Windsor stations had previously attended a fire that destroyed a shed near Windsor railway station.
The incident occurred about 10pm on Sunday, October 21 and four crews, one of which was from Cranebrook, were called to the scene.
“The large shed was fully alight on arrival,” Mr Rowland said.
The fire was soon extinguished and its cause is under investigation.
