A suspended driver who allegedly tested positive for drugs while travelling in a unregistered, defected vehicle with three children in the car is facing charges by Hawkesbury police.
Hawkesbury police released a statement saying the 29-year-old South Windsor man was stopped by officers while driving in Windsor on Saturday, July 14.
“The vehicle being driven by the man allegedly came under notice due to being unregistered and having an un-cleared defect,” Windsor police duty officer Chief Inspector Garry Sims, APM, said in the statement this week.
“We will allege that the man is a suspended driver who at the time had four passengers, including three children under the age of 16, one of who was in a child seat.”
The man was subjected to a roadside drug test, which returned a positive result, he said.
The man was arrested and taken to Windsor police station, where police will allege a secondary test returned a positive reading for cannabis and methamphetamine.
The results will be forensically tested and serious charges could result, Chief Inspector Sims said.
Local police had expressed extreme disappointment with some drivers in the local region, who were still choosing to take risks on Hawkesbury roads, Chief Inspector Sims said.
“Senior police from Windsor have expressed their disappointment with the attitude of some drivers,” he said.
“All drivers have to accept responsibility for their driving.
“A person who drives with illicit drugs in their system will have some form of driving impairment and places the safety of others at risk.
“We are extremely disappointed that there are some drivers who show total disregard for other members of the community.”
Police vehicles in the Hawkesbury are fitted with a raft of technology that detects illegal vehicles quickly.
Chief Inspector Sims said the technology meant that those who chose to break the law faced a very real chance of being eventually stopped by police.
“The message for offending drivers is clear – stop it or cop it,” Chief Inspector Sims said in the statement to the Gazette.
