HAWKESBURY Valley’s first grade team earned itself a hard fought win over Newport while playing in NSW Suburban Rugby Union at the weekend, while Hawkesbury Ag College was upset by Redfield.
Hawkesbury Valley coach John Martin said he was pleased to see the Valley team emerge on top, despite some hairy moments in the second half of the round three contest.
“We were our worst enemies in the first half,” he said.
“The positive thing was that Newport did get ahead at the end but we didn't panic and we hung in tough to score a few more points and get us across the line.”
Martin said the team fought hard all game, and never dropped their heads, adding they scrapped well.
Martin said fullback Michael Lett had a “blinder” of a game, while the team’s captain Anthony Connon also stood up for Valley.
“We are starting to build and the big thing is they are starting to buy in,” Martin said.
Meanwhile, Hawkesbury Ag College had a five-point loss to Redfield, the first of the season for the club.
The club’s second grade team won, though the Colts lost, as did third grade.
As for Hawkesbury Valley, all of their lower grade sides had a loss.
In round four, Hawkesbury Ag College will host Barker Old Boys and Hawkesbury Valley will travel to take on Brothers.
