A reverse vending machine allowing residents to return eligible drink containers for a 10-cent refund has been installed at Schofields, it has been announced.
Riverstone MP Kevin Conolly said the machine was the third for the state electorate, and is located at Woolworths Schofields on Railway Terrace, across the road from Schofields Station.
The machine can be used as part of the State Government’s Return and Earn container deposit scheme, where people can claim 10-cent refunds for eligible drink containers they return.
“People will be able to choose to donate their refund directly to charities, receive a docket redeemable for cash or an electronic transfer using PayPal at the machines,” Mr Conolly said.
The two other reverse vending machines located at Parklea Markets and at the United service station on Windsor Road Vineyard are being heavily used, with Vineyard processing 22,473 and Parklea 15,677 returned containers over just the last weekend, he said.
“There are now more collection points locally and across the state for people to return their used containers,” Mr Conolly said.
NSW Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said the Woolworths Schofields collection point was one of 555 operational sites across the state, with more to be rolled out in the weeks to come.
“There has been widespread community support for Return and Earn, with over 248 million containers returned across the state since December 1,” said Ms Upton.
Most drink containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for the 10c refund. Containers should be intact (not crushed or broken) and have a readable barcode to be eligible.
