Like Alice in Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time takes you down the rabbit hole and makes you question what’s real.
The new live-action Disney film is a fantastical adventure that kids will enjoy.
It’s colourful, hopeful and positively star-studded.
The film is based on the 1962 novel of the same name by American author Madeleine L'Engle.
It follows a young girl, Meg, and her brother and friend as they search the universe for her missing father.
The kids are guided by a trio of ancient, wise helpers – Mrs Which, Mrs Whatsit and Mrs Who.
Acclaimed director Ava DuVernay (Selma) takes the reigns in this $100 million blockbuster and has gathered a host of well-known faces – and a few unknowns – to bring the magical tale to life.
Oprah Winfrey (The Colour Purple), Reese Witherspoon (Big Little Lies) and Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project) star as the three ‘Mrs’, dressed in wacky, over-the-top outfits with crazy hair and glittery make-up.
Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Concussion) play Meg’s parents, while Michael Pena (Ant-Man), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) and Bellamy Young (Scandal) all make appearances.
Aussies Daniel MacPherson (Neighbours) and Levi Miller (Pan) also play father and son in the film.
Kids will find a lot to like in A Wrinkle in Time.
Meg (newcomer Storm Reid) is a self-doubting, snarky but kind girl who is easy to relate to.
Much like Alice, Meg’s journey tests her and requires her to think her way through problems before she can return home. The visuals are very well put together, with some stunning scenery from New Zealand helping along the way.
There’s peril, humour, friendship and fantasy – but most importantly the film leaves viewers with a great message.
It teaches kids that kindness and love are always preferable to fear and darkness, and everyone is struggling to overcome their own inner turmoil.
The film has been sabotaged by some corners of the internet wishing to take it down for featuring a diverse cast, so ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb cannot be fully trusted.
