Sydney FC’s fortress has finally been breached.
After more than 700 days, Sydney FC lost at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
A fired-up Brisbane Roar outfit secured an upset 2-1 victory in the round 23 A-League content.
The Roar made an ideal start when Matt McKay headed home a goal in just the ninth minute.
Brisbane extended that advantage to 2-0 when Jacob Pepper scored in the 18th minute.
At half time, the Roar held a surprise two-goal advantage.
Sydney FC finally hit the scoreboard in the 59th minute when Milos Ninkovic headed home a goal, set up by a Jordy Buijs’ free kick.
Both sides missed their chances in the second half, including a strike by Matt Simon hitting the post.
The score remained at 2-1 at full time.
On top of the loss, there was some controversy off the field for Sydney FC.
Veteran David Carney was subbed out at half time and did not make an appearance on the bench in the second half.
Carney was replaced by debutant Ben Warland.
Despite the result, Sydney FC remains on top of the A-League ladder, but the Newcastle Jets are closing in on the competition leaders.
The Jets strengthened their hold of second spot with a 1-0 win over Wellington on Saturday.
