Morning Buzz: Sydney news, traffic and weather for Monday, July 24

With Sydney drenched in winter sun, a trip to the beach might be tempting.

But the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous surf warning for the NSW coast, including advice from emergency services to stay away from the water.

Maximum temperatures in Sydney are tipped to be well above the July average of 16.4 degrees for each day of the coming week. Sunday is forecast to reach 22 in Sydney, 20 on Monday and Tuesday, and 22 on Wednesday. Read more.

More Australians are dying from accidental opioid overdoses each year, with prescription painkillers rather than heroin now accounting for two-thirds of the fatalities, latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows.

An analysis of finalised ABS data by researchers at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre found 68 per cent of the 668 overdose deaths in 2013 were related to pharmaceutical opioids – a far cry from the heroin epidemic of the 1990s when the majority of opioid deaths were caused by illicit drugs. It was a match Ralph Kelly, an avid Wests Tigers fan, should have been able to enjoy trading friendly barbs with son Stuart, an Eels fan, over.

Instead - after losing Stuart to suicide last year - Mr Kelly and wife Kathy started the inaugural Stay Kind NRL match in their son's memory, which on Sunday saw more than 30,000 punters turn out to support the initiative.

The match, a thrilling clash between the Parramatta Eels and Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium, saw the Eels pip the Wests Tigers by a single point. 

Stay Kind is a youth suicide awareness campaign initiated by the Thomas Kelly Youth Foundation in early 2017 encouraging all Australians to care for each another. Thomas Kelly was killed by a one-punch attack in 2012, while his brother Stuart died last year from suicide. Read more.

A man has died and two others are fighting for life in hospital following a truck crash in Merrylands on Saturday (July 22).

A truck was travelling along Burnett Street at around 12.40pm when it collided with a Hyundai travelling in the opposite direction.

The truck left the road and hit a man who was in the front yard of a nearby property, before it travelled into another front yard and hit two other men.

Emergency services were called to the location, where an elderly man died at the scene. Read more.​

Australia has achieved its ninth straight month of job gains, with 14,000 new jobs added to the economy in June.

Full-time employment grew by 62,000 jobs, while part-time employment decreased by 48,000. Full-time jobs have now increased by 115,400 positions in the past two months - the strongest streak of full-time job gains in 29 years, according to CommSec. Read more.

The spirit of Lord Carrington – and his distinctive handlebar moustache – is living on in a new business venture in the landmark hotel that bears his name.

Katoomba resident Max Steel opened a barbershop, Lord Carrington’s Parlour, in the hotel last week.

Outside a Walmart in San Antonio on Saturday night, police said, they discovered a sweltering tractor-trailer with dozens of people locked inside - eight of them dead and many more with signs of severe dehydration.

Juveniles appeared to be among the dead - numbered and tagged but still unidentified. Read more.

For the first time, IVF doctors will be able to provide women with helpful statistics about the chances of giving birth based on their age and the number of treatment cycles undertaken.

New research published in The Medical Journal of Australia shows that women who start the IVF process while aged between 30 to 34 have a 43.4 per cent chance of a live birth after just one cycle, compared to those between 40 to 44, who have a 10.7 per cent chance. Read more.

Police have charged a Richmond man after an attempted carjacking at Wilberforce on July 11.

The 18-year-old was charged at Windsor Police Station on Friday morning with ‘assault with intent to rob armed with offensive weapon’. He was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court.

The victim of the alleged carjacking, also 18, was sitting in his car at the Wilberforce shops at about 6.30pm on July 11 when another man allegedly approached his car with a knife. Read more.

So tense was the climax to Sunday's finale at ANZ Stadium that even the match winner, Corey Norman, briefly lost his composure.

"Luckily we got away with the win," Norman told Channel Nine seconds after the Eels had completed a 17-16 victory secured by his 77th-minute field goal. "It was scrappy by both teams, wasn't it? At the start it was end to end. But too many f------ errors." Read more.

NSWRL chairman George Peponis says no decision has been made on who will coach the Blues next year and a call on whether Laurie Daley is retained as coach for 2018 won't be made until after the board's State of Origin series review.

There are growing suggestions that Daley has the numbers on the seven-member board to win a new one-year deal despite triumphing in only one of five series since he took the helm and dropping the last three.
