After questions were sent to Roads and Maritime Services on Friday afternoon by The Gazette, we were told the RMS would ‘urgently’ look into the situation.
The footpath on Bells Line of Road, which Colo High School students from North Richmond walk to school along, was blocked, thanks to the construction of a Coles Express service station.
Indeed, it was so urgent that the blockage was moved in a matter of about two hours, according to Colo high School P&C president Peter Chia.
Mr Chia originally contacted The Gazette to report the issue after trying unsuccessfully to ask Hawkesbury Council or the RMS to look into the issue.
Mr Chia estimated at least three to four hundred students per day walked to school from North Richmond.
Hawkesbury Council’s Cristie Evenhuis said a sign was in place, directing pedestrian to cross at the lights at the Grose Vale Road intersection.
She said permission to build the service station was granted so long as the developer complied with RMS regulations.
Council documents show Colo High School was not consulted, when the DA was submitted.
Mr Chia said he suspected the school had not been consulted because the school was too far away.
