Millions of dollars are spent annually on decorating bedrooms for children, but Marcel Andrieux, Interior Design Manager at Elderton Homes, said functionality and style can be achieved without breaking the bank.
Here are her tips:
- Make it timeless
“The design needs to focus on a few basic principles to ensure it remains timeless and functional. I always suggest starting with the child’s favourite colour, toy or character and building a concept from there. Don’t go overboard with a particular theme. For example, if the child likes Batman, simply use a cute wall decal or cushion rather than an entire room filled with Batman items.
“There are several key elements to consider in the design including durability and wash-ability of materials, especially with sticky fingers. Aim for a colour palette that is neutral and versatile to stand the test of time,” Ms Andrieux said.
- Use storage wisely
“Storage is often overlooked. Baskets are a fantastic storage solution for children’s rooms as they can be moved around and are easy to access,” Ms Andrieux said.
- Safety comes first
“Safety is also an important consideration. Look for furniture with soft edges where possible to minimise potential accidents,” Ms Andrieux said.
The Australian Furniture Association encourages people to use sturdy furniture at home with children to avoid safety hazards from toppling furniture.
