Following the success of the 2016 Hawkesbury-Hills Student Leadership Program, the initiative is returning again this year, with the launch dinner taking place next Thursday.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklin, former Chief of the Defence Force and Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AC AFC, and co-host of Channel 7's Morning Show Larry Emdur will be headlining the launch dinner on March 30, backing the program which has been running since 2014.
Now in its third year the leadership program is focused on developing strong leadership skills and instilling a spirit of service in year twelve high school students from across Hawkesbury and the Hills.
Member for Hawkesbury Dominic Perrottet said that each year the initiative concludes with a service project meant to provide a meaningful alternative to the excesses of 'Schoolies Week.'
"Last year's participants travelled to Nyangatjatjara College's campuses near Uluru and Kaltukatjara in the Northern Territory, spending time in the classroom with local Indigenous students and refurbishing the school," Mr Perrottet said.
"I believe the Hawkesbury and Hills are home to the next generation of world-class leaders in business, industry, sport, media, law, defence and politics and I would be delighted if members of the community were able to join us to launch this year's program."
"I am excited to continue this partnership and deepen our relationship with nearby communities."
Previous participants have been left inspired to care for others, serve the broader community and persevere through challenges that come with embarking on post-school life.
Former Colo High School student and participant from last year's program, Matilda Harry praised the initiative.
"Our service work included painting, gardening and general maintenance, whilst also being immersed within the school community,” Miss Harry said.
“We learnt just as much - if not more - than the students. As a HSC student, it is very easy to get caught up in textbooks. This trip broadened our horizons and we gained an awareness of the inequities faced by Indigenous people.”
