HAWKESBURY boxer Daniel Lewis took another step towards qualifying for the Australian Olympic team in Canberra at the weekend.
Lewis won the Oceania Confederation Boxing Championships in the 75 kilogram division after dispatching two fighters with ease at the championships.
The win qualified Lewis to compete at the International Boxing Association World Championship in Doha in October.
A medal in Doha would secure a place on the Olympic team for Lewis.
Lewis’ father Jason said his son was in fine form in Canberra.
‘‘I thought he was outstanding,’’ he said.
‘‘He boxed well. Took his time. He was really composed and he was really on top of his game.
‘‘His preparation in the lead up to this competition was outstanding.
‘‘He was in Canberra for about six weeks. He was training with the Australian coach in preparation for the competition.’’
Daniel first beat New Zealander Daniel Parkin and then defeated Johnathan Keama from Papua New Guinea on his way to winning his division.
Jason Lewis said he won both fights with ease, and never really looked to be pushed by either competitor.
He said Daniel would step into the ring again this weekend at Camden as part of the NSW State Open Titles.
‘‘Daniel has to have two or three fights at Camden, depending on how many nominations there are,’’ he said.
‘‘After that he’ll have a light week, then it will be all systems go because he has the World’s coming up in October in Doha.’’
The state titles are the other way boxers can qualify for the Australian Olympic team.
Lewis would have to win at the state titles, and then go on and do well at the Australian Championships.
Daniel is hell bent on making the Olympic team after missing out on the Commonwealth Games because he had a cut above his eye.
