Creative director Ryan Goodwin said the festival was aimed at "raising awareness of the abilities of people with a disability".
"We are so thankful that film-makers from all over the world are also focusing their talents on this festival," Mr Goodwin said.
Last year 180 films from 168 countries were entered and the films were viewed by more than 277,000 people.
Judge Di Drew, an award-winning director and currently head of screen at NIDA, said last year's standard of films was "exceptional".
"We watched many humbling stories of inspiration," she said.
"I see things differently after seeing these films."
Now in its seventh year, Focus on Ability was launched at Atura Blacktown on May 12 with entries closing on July 10.
Films submitted can be a documentary or short film but must be in keeping with the theme and be no longer than five minutes.
The festival's awards night will be held on September 9 at the Concourse cultural centre in Chatswood, when the winners will be announced.
