Poet’s Fortune headed Love Takes Over inside the final furlong, but when Kembla Grange horse fought back to get its head in front at the 100 metres, Hyeronimus had to throw everything at his mount to get it over the line.
And it worked.
Poet’s Fortune responded to the young hoop’s hard riding to score by a short half head for Hawkesbury’s leading trainer this season, Anthony Cummings.
Hyeronimus was brought into the stewards’ room in regards to his use of the whip.
But he was only reprimanded for use of the whip forward of his horse’s shoulder, and he escaped a fine.
The win brought up a third win from 25 starts for the Cummings-trained five-year-old.
