Mortgage Choice's Jessica Darnbrough said home owners considering renovating should research the costs and time the work would take in order to avoid frustration and budget blow-outs.
"Little things can make a big difference," she said.
"It never hurts to pay attention to the small things when making changes to your home.
"Cleanliness and presentation are always a good place to start and could include cleaning dirty ceiling fans, updating door knobs and handles and painting the skirting boards and door frames.
"You'd be surprised what a big difference these small changes will make to the home and at quite a low cost."
"Don't hire a tradie if you don't need to," she said.
"Even if DIY isn't usually your thing, doing some of the easier tasks yourself will help you to put more money towards the bigger renovations you are planning."
The there's "mates rates".
"While no one likes to take advantage of their friends, there is no doubt that those with the right skills would be happy to help you out if and when you need it," Ms Darnbrough said.
"Whether it is helping you get some materials for your renovation at a discounted rate, or giving up a few hours of their time on a Saturday morning to help with some demolition, every little bit counts!"
