Tradies may be placing their lives at risk after a survey revealed that more than one-in-five blue collar workers might be ‘‘high’’ at work.
Conducted by the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC), a survey of 500 tradies from various fields including mining, construction, transport and defence, revealed 21per cent of respondents indicated they had consumed cannabis within four hours of going to work.
Dr Peter Gates of the NCPIC said that a further 20per cent of respondents were even using cannabis while they were at work.
‘‘The numbers are shocking because most tradies operate heavy machinery, deal with hazardous materials and drive oversized vehicles on public roads,’’ Dr Gates said.
‘‘More than half have identified that their workplace performs regular illicit drug testing but are not fazed by it. This shows the disregard some people have for their own safety and that of their workmates.’’
Cannabis use has been linked to impaired thinking, loss of balance and co-ordination, decreased concentration and impaired ability to do complex tasks.
Dr Gates said it could have a significant impact on work skills and safety.
‘‘Tradies are putting themselves at risk of losing their jobs and even developing respiratory and mental illness.
‘‘If they’re smoking before work it’s also more likely they’re having a problem controlling their use, which is a sign of addiction.”
