THIS Saturday’s Hawkesbury stand-alone meeting will be the richest yet, with three races worth $150,000 and all races carrying a minimum prize money of $100,000.
Last year, the stand-alone featured a high number of quality horses, one of which was a little-known Chris Waller colt named Zoustar.
And just months after his win in the Claret Stakes he was Australia’s hottest horse, valued at $20 million.
While he won’t be at the meeting this year as he embarks on a Royal Ascot campaign, the next champion may emerge. Hawkesbury Race Club’s stand-alone meeting is now in its ninth year, going gangbusters ever since it began in 2006.
Such has been the success of the Hawkesbury stand-alone that TAB turnover, plus fixed odds betting on the 2012 and 2013 days reached figures in excess of $7.7 million, which exceeds 14 metropolitan Saturday TAB turnover results.
But it’s not just on the track where the competition will be hot at the bumper meeting, which is expected to attract more than 10,000 people.
The fashions on the field is one to the most popular events on the day with large numbers of entrants showing off their outfits and styles in the hope of winning one of many dazzling prizes.
