Premier Barry O’Farrell performed the ground breaking ceremony of the multi million-dollar store on Hollingsworth Road at the Sydney Business Park.
The 28,500 square metre store will sit alongside Bunnings, Masters, Costco, McDonalds and Shell and will front Richmond Road, just off the M7.
“IKEA says the new store will create more than 320 jobs in western Sydney and the new Sydney Business Park development will also significantly boost the local economy through investment in new infrastructure at the site,’’ Mr O’Farrell said.
‘‘This expansion by IKEA is a massive vote of confidence in the economy of western Sydney.
‘‘Its development is testament to the high level of confidence in the IKEA business in Australia.
“The North West Growth Centre will contain an estimated 70,000 new homes and 200,000 people by 2035 – development which is being supported by infrastructure such as the upgrade of Richmond Road and the North West Rail Link.’’
IKEA Australia manager David Hood said he was thrilled work had started on the third IKEA store in Sydney.
“With the new homes that are being developed in the area and an increasing number of families moving in, this new store is an important step in IKEA making its range of affordable, well-designed home furnishing products available to as many people as possible,’’ he said.
The store will have 5753 square metres of showroom, 5750 square metres of markethall, a 450 seat restaurant, a staffed children’s play area and 850 car parking spaces.
It is scheduled to open in June, 2015.
