PITT Town residents will take part in Clean Up Australia Day for the second year running and are hoping for more volunteers to help keep their town clean this year.
The Pitt Town Progress Association cleaned up an estimated nine tonnes of rubbish when it participated in Clean Up Australia Day last year.
Roughly 35 residents collected so much rubbish, said organiser Kevin O’Connor, that they actually ran out of bags.
This year, they’ll be more prepared for the day – scheduled for Sunday, March 4 – and hope other residents will join them as they clean up the minor approach roads to Pitt Town.
“Because I've got a thing about litter and graffiti. There was a lot of litter and there still is,” said O’Connor.
“We just wanted to clean the town up. We thought if we had a real big drive it won't be so hard to keep it that way.”
O’Connor is one of four regulars, who give the town a clean up once a week, although they are often joined by extra members of the town when they have the time.
“We just want the town to look respectable and for people to enjoy a clean environment,” he said.
O’Connor said they were hoping for more than 35 people this year to assist in cleaning up the town.
“The town itself is pretty clean, we do regular clean ups there in town. We'll clean up the non-arterial roads leading into town,” he said.
O’Connor said they were not allowed to clean up state government roads because of insurance issues, however, all of the Hawkesbury Council managed roads were fair game.
He said they had already planned the roads which were in most need of a clean up.
On the day, the association has asked any residents who wish to participate to meet at Bona Vista Park at 9am to register.
