HAWKESBURY Anzac Day services are expected to go ahead as usual, despite new anti-terrorism rules affecting other marches.
Last week there was controversy over the cost of the new provisions, particularly water-filled barriers, leading to four Blue Mountains Anzac Day marches being cancelled. It was later resolved.
Richmond RSL Sub-branch president Ron Gray said they had put their application in to police for the road closures for the march pre-Anzac Day and did not expect things to change. “All we do is put up striped road barriers,” he said.
Inspector Peter Jenkins of Hawkesbury Police did not confirm that security would be as usual this year, only saying “we’ll be conducting a risk assessment on each application based on intel, where it’s going to be and what they intend”. But NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford said they weren’t expecting any incidents on Anzac Day.
Windsor RSL Sub-branch’s Leon Walker said their service wouldn’t be affected.
