WOMEN should be able to walk the streets after dark without fear of intimidation, assault or sexual violence.
This is the message that will be taken to the Hawkesbury community as part of Reclaim The Night - an annual event that celebrates women’s rights through a symbolic march through the streets.
This year’s march will take place on the evening of Thursday, October 27, and will see community members march from The Women’s Cottage at 22 Bosworth Street, Richmond, to the Richmond Park Rotunda.
All women and children in the community are encouraged to come along, as well as supportive men.
Anyone interested in marching should meet at The Women’s Cottage at 5:30pm for a 6pm march.
At the completion of the march there will be various free activities and entertainment for adults and children, and a free BBQ.
Reclaim The Night is a global women’s protest against men’s sexual violence, and the local event is being organised by the Hawkesbury Action Network Against Domestic Violence (HANADV) and Hawkesbury Sexual Violence Prevention Network (HSVPN).
According to organisers, one in three women will experience sexual assault in their lifetime, and one in four will experience domestic violence.
