Parramatta Eels player Michael Vella and former coach Daniel Anderson were two of the contestants who stepped up to take part in the CPR endurance challenge at Hawkesbury Race Club on Sunday.
In fact Mr Vella came second in the challenge, after Penrith PE teacher Michael Beggs. Mr Vella scored a bottle of wine and Mr Beggs an Eels fan pack with a backpack and other paraphernalia.
Before the contest Mr Anderson laughed about his chances in the contest, saying he was a bit embarrassed about his CPR skills.
“I’m reyling on Michael,” he grinned. “He’s got his own personal training business, and he’s significantly more aerobically gifted. I’d be lucky to last five minutes! And I don’t mind if there are no other challengers!”
Basketball ambassadors Lily and Newbould and Liam Moss and Lily’s sister Taylor, all from the Hawkesbury Jets, were there too, practising their CPR and selling Rotary raffle tickets.
They were also interviewed on Hawkesbury Radio which was broadcasting from the site. The three are encouraging younger kids to take up basketball and coaching juniors.
Racegoers stepped up to learn CPR and enjoyed the food from vans selling German kransky sausages, Turkish rolls and gozleme,. woodfired pizza and New York reuben sandwiches.
