The Hawkesbury Hawks baseball team had a lesson in humility at the hands of the St Mary’s Saints.
The Hawks have been on fire of late, and sat atop the G3 ladder of the Sydney Metropolitan Basbeball League.
However, St Mary’s came out firing at Bensons Lane on Saturday, to defeat the Hawks 17-3.
It was a case of St Mary’s turning up to play, and the Hawks leaving their bats at home according to Hawks manager Marty Mockford.
“It was just consistent errors. We had a couple of shockers in pitching,” he said.
“St Mary’s came out to bat and they really put it to us. They brought their bats but we left ours at home.
“They came out to play and we had our heads on the high and mighty thinking we couldn't be beaten but we went down big time.”
Mockford said in a losing team, Ben Gray really stood up for the Hawks.
“Ben took a good catch out in left field. The standout was definitely Ben. He batted well and fielded well and did a good job,” he said.
Mockford said it was a reality check for the Hawks, but said the team would stick to its course, and remember what got it to the top of the table.
“I think the big thing we've found is we've had more players so we're able to rotate a lot more and rest guys,” he said.
“We've played a lot of tactics as well, which has really been a big part of getting us to where we are.”
On Saturday, November 28, the Hawks will travel to take on Rouse Hill, who are the cellar dwellers of the league.
Mockford said despite Rouse Hill’s lowly position, he knew the Hawks would have to put up a good fight to conquer their opposition.
