Londonderry boxer Daniel Lewis has defended his Australian 75 kilgram title after defeating long time rival Clay Waterman.
The win means Lewis’ road to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics is still open.
Lewis has already defeated Waterman once this year, and said he was one of the toughest fighters going around in Australia.
“Last nationals I drew him first up. It was the first fight for me at the start of the year and it was the toughest out of all three [at the nationals],” he said.
“Last time I started a bit slow in the first round and had to catch up and work hard in the last two.
“This time around I started off strong and finished off strong.”
Lewis was shattered when a gash above his eye ruled him out of competing in the last Commonwealth Games.
Lewis said he thought history was repeating itself during the fight.
“I was a bit worried. I got hit with a big headbutt and I thought ‘oh my luck I've been cut’, but I didn't get cut.”
