HAWKESBURY Hornets BMX Club will kick off its second interclub-season on Sunday, after the first season finished recently.
Stuart Maittlen and Bryce Girdler were the winners of the A Class and Dad’s Class respectively.
Youngsters Jack Webb, Ajay Potts, Zayne Baldacchinno and Aaron Donald all took out their respective age groups in the past season.
The club will host several meetings at its home track throughout the second half of the year.
While the club is looking forward to the season, it is mostly looking forward to improving the facilities at the track.
There is no clubhouse at Colbee Park, and no lights at the track. A shipping container doubles as both a storeroom and a canteen.
But what the club does have above all that is an ‘awesome’ track according to the club president.
President Bryce Girdler said the club had paid close attention to the Bathurst BMX Club, which has developed an olympic grade track.
‘‘Bathurst has spent millions of dollars developing their track to olympic standard and will host the nationals next year,’’ he said.
‘‘We currently don’t have a club house, we operate out of a shipping container which we turn into a canteen every Sunday.
‘‘So we don’t have a clubhouse or lights but we do have an awesome track and plan to improve it in the future.’’
Mr Girdler said the man to improve the track was club member Brett Barnes, who owns a business developing BMX tracks.
‘‘We’re redesigning our track, luckily we have Brett Barnes, and we are trying to transform our track to host state events,’’ he said.
‘‘We are building a pro-straight for elite riders, something no other clubs in our area have.
‘‘For a club which doesn’t have much in other areas we make up for it in our track.’’
Mr Girdler said the club was in the process of re-submitting an application to Hawkesbury City Council to build a club house at Colbee Park.
