KURRAJONG North Public School repeated several years’ success in winning first and second prizes for cake decoration, in the recent Hawkesbury Show’s junior cooking competition.
Nine year 6 pupils entered this year’s competition.
Ben Sorrenson’s cake won first place, Grace Dollimore’s, second place and Hyrum Browning and Cam Lloyd were highly commended for their work.
The other pupils in the competition were Claudia Torriera, Jake Metcalfe, Tianna Collins, Zac Stevenson and Linda Abdi.
‘‘We’ve tried to make this an annual event and rite of passage for our year 6 kids,’’ Kurrajong North Public School’s Parents and Citizens’ Lucy Baranowski said.
‘‘When I teach them how to bake and decorate the cakes, it’s interesting to see how their little minds get creative,’’ Mrs Baranowski said.
‘‘I tell them that we don’t enter the show to win, but so they can go to the show with their families and see the cakes they’ve made and decorated.’’
She said the cake-making class and competition were not only pleasant distractions from the school curriculum, they helped the pupils think about their changing world.
‘‘Next year in high school they’re going to be in a different environment,’’ Mrs Baranowski said.
‘‘Until then, this school is a small, close community for the children and it’s good to reward them for things done.’’
