When Disney's "toys come to life" video game Disney Infinity was first announced in early 2013, it was only months after the media giant had acquired Lucasfilm.
That acquisition was a big deal for geeks: George Lucas selling the entire Star Wars universe to Disney, and it was still recent news when Disney Infinity was unveiled. Naturally, it was speculated that Star Wars characters would be coming to Infinity sooner rather than later.
The only real surprise is that it took two years. The initial 2013 release of Disney Infinity focused on core Disney properties: Pixar, Disney animation, and live-action Disney Studios films. Last year, the game's first big update was released, centring around Marvel superheroes, also Disney-owned.
Yesterday, inevitably, came the announcement: Disney Infinity 3.0 would be based around Star Wars. The starter pack appears to have a Clone Wars flavour. In addition to the game disc and the reader base, it will include a playset set amid the fall of the republic during the prequel trilogy, and two figures: Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, both of whom were major characters in the Clone Wars animated TV series.
At least two other Star Wars playsets will be available for purchase separately: one set during the original trilogy of films that will feature familiar characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, and another based on the upcoming seventh film The Force Awakens.
In addition to these, there will be a playset based on the new Pixar film Inside Out, and another featuring Marvel characters seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Disney is also promising more classic Disney characters, including Mickie and Minnie, Mulan, and Olaf the snowman from Frozen.
This is more than just a bunch of new figurines and some new playgrounds to play with them in, however. Disney is promising a host of new gameplay features, including lightsaber battles and Jedi force powers. The toybox will also feature tools and building blocks that will allow players to easily create their own kart racing levels and action-adventure games, and even farming simulators.
As before, Disney Infinity 3.0 will be fully compatible with all previous figurines in the series, exponentially increasing the dizzying combinations players can enjoy.
Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, and Pixar characters will all be playable together, so anyone who has ever wanted to race Luke Skywalker's speeder with Donald Duck at the helm will probably be in luck.
No specific release date has been announced, but it will be available during the 2015 Christmas shopping period, and will be playable on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, PC, and both Apple and Android touch-screen devices.
