Hawkesbury City has produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2015 FFA Cup so far, defeating St George 1-0 in the fourth preliminary round last Wednesday night.
Attacking midfielder Evan Daglis tapped home near the end of the first period of extra time from an Ahmed Khan cross to hand the Hawks a place in the fifth round.
The game had finished 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes with Hawkesbury, who play in State League 1, having the better of the chances against their more fancied NPL 2 rivals.
Hawks coach Dean Bertenshaw said he was proud of his players – despite at one stage thinking it might not have been their night.
“We hit the post three times then managed to hit it again in extra time,” he said.
“I was starting to think it might turn into one of those nights.
“They played a full strength side as well. They were desperate to go through as is everybody.
“I actually think we had the best of the game. Each to their own but I thought we had more chances.
“It was good to go to their ground and get the result.”
The Hawks have drawn Illawarra Premier League team Woonona at home in the FFA Cup fifth preliminary round with the match to be played next week.
It was to be a busy week for Hawkesbury who were to return to league action against Rydalmere on Saturday night.
Sydney's wet weather late last week saw the game washed out.
The Hawks host Hills Brumbies in the State League on Saturday at Bensons Lane.
Kick-off is at 4pm.
