Council will allow circuses, which feature exotic animals, to continue to visit the Hawkesbury LGA after a push for a review was thrown out at the February 24 Council meeting.
The plan to look at options to ban circuses in the LGA came from a notice of motion by Councillor Leigh Williams in November last year.
Adam St James from Stardust and Lennon Brothers Circus said they had played to sold-out performances in the Hawkesbury and had a strict code of practice they must follow, which includes enclosure sizes and how long they can transport animals from one town to the next.
"Animals in the circus live a rich and rewarding life and have daily interaction with their trainers,’’ he said.
‘‘Animals in a zoo are left in a concrete enclosure.’’
A majority of councillors agreed it should be up to the community to decide whether they visit the circus or not.
