More than 30 bands competed at the Sydney University Band Competition held at Manning Bar on September 3, with Hawkesbury-based NARLA taking out the top spot after being the favourite band on the night.
NARLA are described as original with a unique raw and progressive sound.
For taking out the top prize, NARLA earned themselves a $2000 cheque, which can be used to help them furthering their musical career.
The trio started making music together after they found they shared musical interests in common with each other in high school.
They take a keen interest in the classical, jazz and world music genres, which gives their band a diversity not often seen among rock groups.
NARLA have been performing together seriously for a year and plan to take the band from unknowns to making a name for themselves in the Sydney music scene.
To win the Sydney Uni Band Competition would be a step in the right direction for the trio.
The band made a name for themselves with a lively show, a strong stage presence and dedication to the songs.
The boys have also been asked to join the 2015 Mojo Burning festival which will be their first interstate trip.
NARLA’s guitarist, Nick Savvas, said he was very excited to be playing in the festival.
‘‘It’s really exciting playing with bands we respect and love to listen to. Winning the comp has been an added bonus to all these exciting shows.’’
NARLA will next compete in the state final of the competition at Manning Bar on September 18.
