House of the Dragon begins Monday, August 22 from 11am (AEST) on Fox Showcase and Binge
It's been more than three years since Game of Thrones' supersized final season aired, and the fervour for the George R.R. Martin's fantasy world has not died down in the interim.
In just a few days, the world will get to experience even more of the that world - specifically, the Targaryen dynasty - in prequel series House of the Dragon.
The new show is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and is based on Martin's Fire and Blood series. It details the beginning of the end of the Targaryen dynasty over the seven kingdoms of Westeros.
Aussies Ryan Corr and Milly Alcock star alongside Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and more.
To celebrate the start of this new series, we're taking a look back at some of the most memorable moments from Game of Thrones.
It goes without saying, but if you're yet to watch GOT, then you're best not to read on.
Birth of the dragons
It's one of the most iconic, striking pieces of imagery from the Game of Thrones canon - Daenerys emerges from the smoldering ashes of her husband Khal Drogo's funeral pyre with three newborn dragons by her side. Before this moment we had hints that the future Breaker of Chains was connected to dragons like her ancestors, but it was never fully realised until the season one finale. She immediately earned the respect of the remaining Dothraki people, a step along the way of her eventual ascension to the Iron Throne.
The Red Wedding
Even if you'd never watched GOT to this point, chances are you heard about The Red Wedding in season three. In a shock no one (except those who had read the books) could see coming, several of the shows main characters were offed spectacularly at the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. Roose Bolton betrays his Stark allies as Robb, new pregnant wife Talisa and Catelyn Stark are all murdered during the festivities. Haunting tune The Rains of Castamere plays in the background.
The Mountain and the Viper
In a show filled with absolutely brutal deaths, perhaps the most violent and shocking was fight between Gregor 'The Mountain' Clegane and Oberyn 'The Viper' Martell in season four. Their fight is a trial by combat, with the Viper representing Tyrion, and the Mountain representing the Lannisters. The Viper thinks he's won, and gloats to the group, only to be knocked back down and have his head literally squished into a pulp.
Jon Snow's 'death'
We didn't think it would be real, but this being the show that beheaded its main character in the ninth episode, no one was ever really safe. Jon Snow, Lord Commander of the Night Watch, was murdered by his peers for his sympathies towards the wildlings. The season five finale left us all shocked as Jon slowly bled out in the snow. Of course, he was resurrected a few episodes later, but we had to wait months for that.
Hodor
There weren't too many moments on Bran Stark's journey that deserved revisiting, but the death of fan favourite cannot be overlooked. As Bran's party is trying to escape death in the Three-Eyed Raven's underground lair, they require Hodor to ensure their safe passage by 'holding the door' and keeping the beasties at bay. Bran wargs into Hodor, but something goes wrong and the psychic connection travels all the way back to Hodor as a child. He repeats 'hold the door' over and over until it becomes 'Hodor'.
Battle of the Bastards
The most engrossing, compelling and heart-wrenching battle of the series - the Battle of the Bastards pitted Jon Snow's men against the truly despicable Ramsay Bolton and his army in order to take back Winterfell. Its bloody, muddy and brutal. The whole thing kicks off with Ramsay killing youngest Stark Rickon before Jon's eyes. There are plenty of moments when you genuinely think Jon's not going to make it.
