Anyone wanting to get a pet in France will need to spend one week reflecting on the decision.
Wild animals at the circus are to become a thing of the past in France after parliament passed a ban.
Senate lawmakers gave the legislation their final approval, making the purchase, sale and breeding of wild animals for travelling circus performances illegal two years from now.
Performances themselves, as well as holding and transport, will become illegal seven years after the law takes effect.
The law also stipulates that anyone wanting to get a pet must spend a period of one week reflecting on the decision in a bid to combat impulse purchases which often lead to animals being abandoned, the Senate said.
Higher penalties are also to apply for abandoning and mistreating pets.
