Luis Suarez has struck late on to earn Atletico Madrid a crucial 2-1 win over Osasuna that keeps his team top of La Liga going into the final week of the season.
Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 and would have moved first as Osasuna led Atletico - but late strikes from Renan Lodi and Suarez sent the Rojiblancos back to the summit.
Barcelona, third, were officially ruled out of the title race with a 2-1 home defeat by Celta Vigo.
Atletico spurned several first-half chances, with Suarez hitting the post, seeing Sergio Herrera save one of his efforts and dragging another past the post.
Finally they appeared to break the deadlock, with Stefan Savic firing home after Kieran Trippier's free kick was flicked on, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Ante Budimir headed Osasuna in front against the run of play but Renan Lodi emphatically drilled home an equaliser after breaking into the area and Suarez struck in the 88th minute to ensure Simeone's side are top on 83 points from 37 games.
"It's a moment of happiness, we don't deserve to suffer so much," said Suarez. "We had one of the best first halves of the season.
"We have to get used to it because to win the league you have to suffer. Now we have to enjoy this and be calm for the game next week.
"If you fight, battle and don't give up, you can get to your objective. Nerves can cost you but we were calm and managed to get the victory."
Real Madrid are second after their tight 1-0 win at San Mames, with 81 points, two behind Atletico.
Casemiro headed against the crossbar as Madrid kept up the pressure and eventually earned victory through Nacho in the 68th minute.
The defender knocked home Casemiro's cross at the back post, knowing little about it as the ball bashed off his shin.
Raul Garcia was sent off in the final stages for Athletic as they could not find an equaliser.
At Camp Nou, Barcelona took the lead through Lionel Messi, with the captain nodding home his 30th league goal of the season from Sergio Busquets's cross.
However, Celta Vigo quickly levelled when Santi Mina drove home from the edge of the box after being teed up by strike partner Iago Aspas.
Martin Braithwaite should have scored in the final stages but Mina netted at the other to consign Ronald Koeman's team to defeat and their first finish outside the top two since 2008.
Elsewhere Getafe ensured they will not be relegated with a 2-1 win over Levante, leaving three of Huesca, Real Valladolid, Elche and Eibar to be relegated on the last day of the season.
Huesca were beaten 1-0 by Real Betis, Valladolid were thrashed 4-1 by Real Sociedad, Elche earned a 3-1 win at Cadiz and Valencia romped to a 4-1 win over Eibar.
Villarreal earned a surprise 4-0 win over Sevilla, while Alaves beat Granda 4-2.
