The Informer: India travel ban challenge begins in Federal Court

Melbourne man Gary Newman, who is stuck in Bangalore, asked the Federal Court to scrap the public health order that outlaws Australian citizens from arriving home from India.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison introduced the travel ban, which is due to end on May 15, amid a deadly surge in coronavirus cases in India.

Mr Morrison announced last week that at least three repatriation flights from India would arrive in Australia by the end of May.

In NSW health authorities continue to search for the source of a locally acquired case after a Sydney man in his 50s contracted the Indian variant of COVID-19.

NSW recorded no new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm Sunday night, but restrictions remain in place for Wollongong and Greater Sydney.

NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said authorities were still working to find the "missing link" but praised the man for being so cooperative.

"He's really gone above and beyond to help us," Dr Chant said.

Shifting gears now, TV legend Bert Newton underwent surgery to have his leg amputated below the knee after a toe infection he contracted around Christmas became a serious medical issue.

The 82-year-old is in "good spirits" after the life-saving leg amputation, according to his wife Patti.

"He's in really good spirits, he's got a big journey ahead of him, as we all have," she said.

"But you know Bert, onward and upward and I'm sure he'll be fine."
