Recovery and clean up continues following the devastating March floods that had damaged many Hawkesbury roads.
A mixture of both main and side roads are currently being repaired or assessed for damage by Hawkesbury City Council as they quickly try to get all roads safe and open to the public.
Hawkesbury City Mayor, Patrick Conolly said that funding for the road works will be fronted by the State and Federal Governments, and that council is assessing the damage, what is needed and then going to tender with that information.
"Roadworks is the biggest issue we are facing. A lot of roads have been severely damaged and require works," he said.
"It is a huge task for our council given our size and the amount of roads that need fixing. Our main priority is making sure our residents can access everything that they need."
Cr Conolly said that through the council's assessment of each road they are then prioritising which roads need fixing first.
Freemans Reach Road, a main road that leads to Windsor Bridge, was severely damaged by "river/flood erosion on the surrounding lands and affecting the road embankments", said Jeff Organ, Director Infrastructure Services.
"The damage has been assessed and a number of options are currently being considered to enable the road to be reopened to traffic," said Mr Organ.
"At this stage we are unable to confirm a time-frame for repairs however every effort will be made to open the road as soon as possible.
"Our restoration works and methods will take into account [the] causes to reduce the likelihood of future flood erosion."
With many detours across the Hawkesbury in place, council will be monitoring all local roads to ensure their safety and interim works will be carried out on detour roads if they are required.
This includes Kurmond Road (current detour for Freemans Reach Road), which had sustained damage following floods in 2020.
Council had begun reconstruction, but has put that on hold and said they "will recommence reconstruction again when other more urgent flood damage works are completed".
