Police are looking for the car owned by Dinh Lam Nguyen, whose body was found in a dam near Perth.

A man whose body was found inside a wheelie bin floating in a dam in the West Australian foothills has been identified as 51-year-old Dinh Lam Nguyen.

Members of the public discovered Mr Nguyen's body inside the partially submerged bin on Monday afternoon at Glenbrook Dam in the John Forrest National Park, east of Perth.

It is believed Mr Nguyen was last seen on January 20 in Balga, where he lived.

Police on Wednesday said Mr Nguyen was reported missing by an associate on January 22, but the information provided at the time "did not suggest he was in any imminent danger".

"Inquiries conducted by police in relation to the missing person report over the following days did not identify any possible locations where Mr Nguyen may have travelled," WA Police said in a statement.

Homicide detectives are appealing for information regarding his movements in the days prior to his body being discovered.

They are also trying to find his car, a blue Mazda 3 sedan with the registration number 1CWD761.

Anyone with information regarding his movements or the whereabouts of his car is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.

Police are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who saw the bin in the dam or witnessed any other suspicious activity in the area.
