Hawkesbury City Council's annual 'Australia Day on the Hawkesbury' event will not be proceeding this year due to the current Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings, however Council is encouraging locals to celebrate Australia Day (Tuesday, January 26) "the Hawkesbury way" by staying local.
The Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Patrick Conolly, said: "Let's stay local and celebrate with family and friends in a COVID-Safe way. We'd love to see your photos on how you're celebrating your Australia Day. You might have a backyard barbie or a splash in the local pool or even an afternoon bushwalk with friends."
Tag 'Hawkesbury City Council' in your own Facebook post and Hawkesbury Events Instagram page www.instagram.com/hawkesburyevents and use the hashtag #ausdayhawkesburyway.
The Hawkesbury Visitor Information Centre has plenty of information on how you can discover the Hawkesbury, so if you're looking for ideas, visit www.discoverthehawkesbury.com.au or drop in at 328 Hawkesbury Valley Way, Richmond.
"As part of the celebrations, Council will provide free entry for our community to Richmond Swimming Centre and the Oasis Aquatic and Leisure Centre from midday to 4pm," the Mayor said.
Council will also hold one-hour Park Pop Ups with free ice cream and free Australia Day promotional giveaways at four of our local parks. See Council's Facebook page for details about Park pop ups, with more details available on Australia Day.
You can even relax at home and watch Council's Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on Council's YouTube channel at bit.ly/2KcuGPO from 9am to 10am - something really important for the family and friends of people becoming new citizens in 2021, especially when numbers are limited for attending the ceremony in person, due to Covid-Safe requirements.
"You will also be able to hear our Australia Day Ambassador, Gary Dawson OAM talk about his experiences as a marathon golfer and his passionate support of Australian charities, having fundraised just over $18 million dollars for charities over the past 25 years," Mayor Conolly said.
"The Hawkesbury winners of the 2021 Australia Day Awards, including the Young Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Sports Person of the Year, will also be announced on Council's YouTube channel from 11am to midday and live streamed at a special ceremony."
