The Gazette asked next year's school leaders Amelia Ashley (17) and Dennis Dawe (16) from Richmond High about their plans for 2021.
1. What do you think the top three challenges will be for you?
A: 2021 probably still won't be back to complete normal and so it's inevitable that the role of being school captain will need a bit of adjusting, so shifting to this may be a little surprise. Not that I would call it a bad challenge but juggling year 12 as well as school leader jobs will be a learning opportunity for me, and honestly the biggest challenge is knowing that this is my last year of school, where I've always looked up to and admired the older student leaders, but I'm now in their position to make the same effect they did on me.
D: I think managing my time between my school responsibilities and my personal commitments will be a challenge. Making plans and putting them into practice may be a challenge, especially formulating changes that make a difference. To be honest, I've never been in a real leadership position before, so I suppose I have to learn how things operate but I am determined to step up to the plate and lead Richmond High School with the rest of the Senior Leadership Team.
2. What current issues will you be keeping an eye on?
A: Environmental and animal rights is something I put my full attention to as it's heartbreaking to see the amount of damage that people are oblivious to.
D: The issues I will be following in 2021 is hopefully some development in the Covid-19 vaccination, the Biden administration and how the dynamic will change as well as the rising tension between China and Australia.
3. How do you plan to lead your fellow pupils?
A: I hope that people see me as a joyful person where I wish to radiate off that positive energy, as ultimately being happy is the most important thing in life.
D: I will lead Richmond High School cooperatively, sharing the roles with my counterpart and working with students as a collective to achieve shared goals and outcomes which benefit everyone, taking everyone's opinions on board and making alterations where necessary.
4. What changes do you hope to implement at the school next year?
A: To make school a more comfortable and welcoming place.
D: I wish to empower and uplift people, make them realise their potential, to make sure they get the right tools and support to succeed, so they can understand their place, and where they fit in. I believe that, as a school captain, the Senior Leadership Team of 2021 will strive to allow people the opportunity to see who they are and where they're going, to make 2021 the year of personal growth.
